Our Story:

Jonathan Pingel:

Growing up, health and fitness were always a big part of my life.  My father was a college track athlete and he passed on his passion for fitness to our family. I was a three-sport athlete for Beloit High School in Kansas.  My passion was for track and field.  I competed in multiple events and earned a Track and Field scholarship to Doane College in Crete, Nebraska.

While at Doane I was blessed with outstanding coaches. Their training built the physical and mental foundation necessary for me to be an All American in the Decathlon, Pentathlon, and 4X400 Relay. After college, I stayed in good shape by working out at a ‘Globo-Gym’.

I soon discovered that working out without some form of competition lowered my intensity level.  My competitive drive needed a boost so I started doing Marathons and Triathlons.  I enjoyed these but sensed something was still missing.  In reflecting back on my athletic life, I realized that I was the most motivated when I was part of a team. I had been on a team for most of my life and I needed the community.

I happened to see some posts about a gym in Omaha that had great success at a fitness competition in 2009.  I started reading about local CrossFit athletes like Ricky Frausto and Kyle Kasperbaur. My curiosity was peeked! I wondered if I might be able to someday compete with these great athletes. I made the decision to join a CrossFit box with excitement.

The past five years have been amazing. With CrossFit, just like at Doane College, I was blessed with outstanding coaches. I had the honor to compete at the Regional CrossFit Games as part of an affiliate team in 2012 and 2013. The CrossFit focus on core training has guided me, at age 32, to be in the best shape of my life!  This was evident when I competed and won the Lifetime Fitness National Alpha Challenge in 2013.

I am currently a middle school Art Teacher and coach for Westside Middle School in Omaha NE.  For the past 10 years I have been the head Cross Country and Track/Field Coach at Westside. With the encouragement of my CrossFit community and family, I completed my CrossFit Endurance and CrossFit Level 1 Certifications.  With these certifications I have been a coach at CrossFit Vise.

CrossFit has become our families’ means to a healthy lifestyle. Currently, four of my siblings, along with my father, and wife are all active CrossFit enthusiasts. We love it!  With my family’s support I hope to continue to use CrossFit to improve not only my family and friend’s lives, but also encourage and mentor countless new lives at CrossFit Papio in the Papillion/LaVista area!
